Spring it to Me!

The amazing spring weather is bringing me out of hibernation mode. This was my first winter in San Francisco and it rained, drizzled, hailed, poured and even snowed (if you were on floor 10 of a high rise, otherwise slush when it hit the ground). There were huge muddy puddles to splash in (not fun on a run), coats & gloves, and lots of indoor time. I really never felt hibernation mode in San Diego so I was worried I was getting lazy and depressed. Nope, it's just the weather and everyone has to roll with it best they can. I really can't complain as I haven't experienced a east coast or mid west winter.

I got to work in a garden today with a bunch of adolescents at Excelsior School through an organization called Urban Sprouts that I volunteer with. We planted summer squash and tomato seeds, harvested lettuce, dill and carrots. It was Salad Day so they learned how to prepare a fresh salad straight from their garden as well as hummus, applesauce vinaigrette and "healthy" ranch. There were about 35 of them so it was a little crazy organizing all their jobs to do. Especially because they are all doodling, having little conversations, and distracting each other any way they can. They are constantly qouting movies, TV shows and stuff on You Tube. One of the boys was excited to clean the blender for me because he saw how they do it on the Food Network (water + soap inside + blend). They were slightly more helpful and interested today because we were actually making food. I consider most of their language and jokes to be verbally and sexually explicit, then again they ARE the next generation so I'm not surprised. The teacher is often reminding them to listen while someone else is talking. Personally I think that is the most valuable lesson the kids could learn! There are many adults that still lack listening skills.

Well I'm off to go camp on Malibu Beach this weekend with my sweetheart for my brother-in-law's 30th Birthday. This is like the 5th person I know turning 30 this year and they are all maturing graciously and joyously! I haven't been beach camping in awhile so these are the goods I can't wait for: 5 of my 9 siblings will be there (no one get's a DeHart like a DeHart), ocean misty breeze, skinny girl margaritas, sand in my toes (but not in my tent), SoCal sun, Sprinkles cupcakes, burnt marshmallows, yoga and running on beach, sunsets over the water with a green flash, soundtrack of the waves 24/7.......
