Yoga Therapy (also know as Viniyoga)

is a gentle, restorative style of yoga that modifies postures to meet the needs of the individual student. Therefore, it is often taught as private, therapeutic yoga. Yoga Therapy refers to the adaptation and application of Yoga techniques and practices to help individuals facing health challenges at any level manage their condition, reduce symptoms, restore balance, increase vitality and improve attitude. Modern yoga therapy can be traced back to the yoga master T. Krishnamacharya, who produced students that became the West’s most influential teachers of therapeutic yoga, including his son TKV Desikachar (Viniyoga) and BKS Iyengar.
My teacher is Anne Nowell who has studied with both Desikachar and Iyengar as well as K. Pattabhi Jois. I completed a 200 hr teacher training course with her in January 2009 and am now completing Yoga Alliance certification.

I currently offer private yoga sessions only.

Ashtanga Yoga

is a strong athletic practice characterized by the vinyasa flow in between poses.The whole practice is defined by six specific series of postures, always done in the same order, combined with specific breathing patterns (Free breathing with the ujjāyī sound). Ashtanga yoga literally means "eight-limbed yoga," as outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. According to Patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the Universal Self consists of the following eight spiritual practices:

1. Yama, which means social restraints or ethical values;
2. Niyama, which is personal observance of purity, tolerance, and study;
3. Asanas or physical exercises;
4. Pranayama, which means breath control or regulation;
5. Pratyahara or sense withdrawal in preparation for Meditation;
6. Dharana, which is about concentration;
7. Dhyana, which means Meditation; and
8. Samadhi, which means ecstasy or super-consciousness.

Vinyasa Ashtanga Yoga is much more than the practice of asana or posture it is a compendium of techniques and attitudes through the practice of which the aspirant may attain self realization. The aim is to free the practitioner from the mental loops which can often distort, delete and overgeneralize our perception of daily experience. Yoga is both a journey and a destination.
My teacher is Anne Nowell and I continue to practice and study Ashtanga with various teachers and on my own.

I currently offer private yoga sessions only.
